Things Wrong With Elementary Already:

A commentary made while watching the first trailer

1. The obvious: Watson is a girl. I’m sorry, can’t get past that. Moving on.

2. HOLMES DOES NOT WORK FOR SCOTLAND YARD. Never has, never would.

3. Even if he did, he would not only work homicide. In fact, only a handful of the cases in the canon involved murder at all.

4. JOHN Watson would not be appalled by the sight of a murder victim because a.) he was in the army and b.) he’s a doctor. Maybe disconcerted, but none of this gasping business.

5. “Sometimes I hate it when I’m right.” No. Holmes would not feel sentiment about discovering a dead body. It’s more likely that he’d be excited.

6. Why is Watson consulting with Holmes’ father? …

7. Oh, she’s hired by his father to be his “sober companion”. ……… Do I even need to say what’s wrong with that? HIRED to live with Holmes? URG.

8. This is really minor, but why does Holmes have tattoos? In fact, this guy doesn’t look anything like Holmes, and you can’t completely ignore image with such an iconic character. Just sayin’.

9. Watson’s no longer a doctor at all. Apparently, he/she had his license taken away when one of his/her patients died. Because losing one patient automatically means having your medical license revoked. (Granted, there might have been extenuating circumstances… we’ll see.)

10. Oh my gosh, his insensitivity is so forced. Everything about this guy is so forced. But maybe I’m letting my other opinions color my judgement.

11. Oh, look. Watson’s reaction to his insensitivity is incredibly forced, too.

12. Holmes would not be that sorry for wrecking Watson’s car, especially when they haven’t known each other for that long. And he CERTAINLY wouldn’t apologize for his rudeness so early on.

13. Oh, behold the already-brewing romance.

Lucky 13 things wrong in 3:21 minutes. I can’t wait to see an entire episode. :/

1) Lots of people can’t either, but a gender flip isn’t necessarily bad. CBS had their own contemporary adaptation, in the late 80’s called The Return of Sherlock Holmes, with Margaret Colin as Jane Watson. She’s John’s great-granddaughter, but this means it’s not the first times Holmes is assisted by a woman. Perhaps this is a nod to that.

2) The precise nature of Holmes’s association with Scotland Yard wasn’t mentioned. The only thing we’re sure of is the detective was assigned there and crossed paths with him.

3) Thus, whatever cases he helped the Yard with could’ve been specialized to homicide. There’s no saying he hasn’t worked other types of cases when he’s hired by a private individual.

4) I wouldn’t say Watson was appalled. There’s also the issue of Watson being female and away from hospitals for a while. Even experienced individuals have the right to be surprised.

5) The glee of solving murder is more associated with BBC Sherlock. Canon-wise, Holmes behaves more appropriately—hops right to the investigation. He’s also charming and rather amiable, with a better handle on people’s sensitivities. Miller’s response may very well be a different take on Holmes’s personality altogether.

6) Why shouldn’t she? I suppose this is what’s called an artistic license. Adding Holmes’s father is like adding Molly Hooper—I’m sure it has plot reasons.

7) Initially bound by a sense of duty. I personally think it’s an interesting change compared to following your flatmate for not much reason at all or for treating reverse PTSD.

8) Again, an adaptation. BC and RDJ don’t even have the right nose! The tattoos may be a plot device, for all we know. Everything has its reasons—we just have to find out what.

9) We’ll see, indeed. There’s definitely something there.

10) I won’t argue since this is a personal opinion, and everyone is entitled to theirs.

11) See above.

12) Like I said, Miller’s is a different take on Holmes. Canon Holmes is more sensitive to other people’s feelings. He even apologized to Watson early on in their relationship as well, I’ll have you know.

13) If you’re searching for romance, you’ll find it.

Warning: Opinions to come. Knowing Tumblr, may cause offense.

I agree with everything Fox said, and also if Sherlockians don’t like the idea of Elementary, shut the fuck up and don’t watch it. Its a simple solution really. Also, saying that Miller doesn’t look like Holmes is stupid, Holmes is first of a book creation and while, yes, he is described he’ll look different in each person’s mind, so stop whining. I’m getting that the complaints are coming from people that haven’t read the books and think Holmes is either Benedict or RDJ.

If you want to pick up on faults from canon, how about the fact that’s not set in the 1800s? Its whining like this that makes me hate the Sherlock fandom.

I didn’t mean to offend anyone by posting this. I do feel the need to defend myself by saying that I *have* read all 60 of the original stories and had done so before I ever saw BBC Sherlock. Therefore, I know what I’m looking for in an adaptation and am basing my opinions off that. And yes, I do admit that my comments are OPINIONS. I am going to give Elementary a fair chance when it comes out, just like I would with any other adaptation. To be fair, I didn’t really like the idea of Sherlock when it was coming out, either, so maybe this will surprise me, too. No one’s looking for a fight- everyone’s entitled to their own opinions, and we can form true ones once it comes out. :)

That’s fair enough then. And my rant wasn’t solely directed at you. It was more at the Sherlockians that don’t want others to have opinions if it differs from theirs and don’t give anything a fair chance. And the ones that bitch and complain cause Martin and/or Benedict have significant others. You know the type.

I agree, you’re allowed your own opinion and that’s all well and good.

I’m sorry if I offended you, I just assumed you were one of those Sherlockians. I seem to have so many that show up on my dash that I forget some Sherlockians are nice enough.

Thanks. It’s appreciated. :)
